September Welcome

Wow, time has sure flown by already!  My usual first week welcome post is now coming in the third week of school.  We've had a busy couple of weeks in room 26 and I have to say, this group of students is pretty AWESOME.  We have a great group of hard-working, kind-hearted kids with a great sense of curiosity.  I can foresee that we're going to have a great year together!

We welcome Ms. Woods to our class this year.  She is a fifth year student teacher and we're lucky to have her.

We also welcome Ms. G.  She is an educational assistant that works in our room and is a gigantic help to our students!

I am planning to use this blog as more of a means for students to showcase their work and ideas.  I will also share with you exciting adventures that are happening in, and out of, our room.

I hope you're all having a great September!

Here are some pictures from our first weeks together.  #backtoschoolselfie

TUSC

Hi everyone!  Today was a very exciting day in our class...exciting for Zidane because it's his BIRTHDAY (Happy Birthday again, Zidane!)!  And exciting for the whole class because we had our first TUSC meeting!

TUSC stands for Totally Unique Speaking Club.  Each student has to prepare for a "job" where they have to present on a topic to the class, or take notes (secretary) or evaluate their classmates (general reporter).  Today Kate led our meeting as Chairperson and kept things going well throughout our meeting.

Everyone presented very well and I know I enjoyed everyone's unique presentations!  Way to go room 26!  Here's some photos from our meeting.

Guest Reader

In celebration of I Love to Read Month, I've invited family to come in and read to our class.  On Friday morning, we had the pleasure of meeting Marten Posthumus, a local artist and great-grandfather to one of our classmates.  He has recently had his work published as a book and he came to share his process of art-making and how he started to be published. Art is a fantastic form of literacy and we learned a lot from a very talented artist.

His advice was simple, if you like to draw, keep at it.  He told us he was not that good when he started as a boy but with practice and determination, he became better and better.  His artwork was fantastic and the stories of how they came about were exciting to listen to.  The students were quite fascinated by his talent and had many great questions for him.   We're so grateful he came to share with us!

Another thing I learned was how to paint a cardinal for art.  Mine was horrible.  It was really hard to do.  Carson and I did our social studies.  He did three research   questions when I had to write on the netbook. I did two pages of writing and I felt very rushed.

One thing I enjoyed was gym because of dodgeball and gymnastics.  It was really fun and hard at the same time.

Another thing I enjoyed was intramurals because we played dodgeball with Ms. Davis’s class.  It was fun.

One goal I have is to finish “Amulet.”  I will do this by having time.
